Memoir evoked by place

Posted on May 15, 2023 by Sandy Weisman

A summer day in June.  A stone wall, the ocean within view, a few passing clouds, a barn, song birds, perhaps a wild turkey and her brood.  The trees are in full leaf – an oak, an apple tree, and many spruce.  And you!

Old stone wall

This is the setting for Memoir evoked by place on Sunday, June 25 with writer Mimi Edmunds, who wants us to mine our memories and tell our stories. We’ll read a few passages together, perhaps by John Muir, the great botanist and ecologist, and then we’ll begin to write down what comes to mind.  We’ll take a walk down to the sheep barn or the ocean.  Perhaps we’ll each sit still under the shade of the great oaks here.

A path in the woods

Mimi will gently raise the ante:  Who is with us in those memories, what are the feelings we have?  And we’ll each do more writing and sharing.

This is the rhythm of the memoir writing experience with Mimi Edmunds, and the bucolic setting for the day.

As a poet and artist, I have great faith in this process.  It’s not really to write what you know, as many have said, but to write what you don’t know, what you’ve left out, what you wish to understand a bit better about your life.

At the end of the day each of us will have begun a new chapter in our memoir writing experiences.  Perhaps it’s your first.  Maybe you will uncover a memory, a scene, a forgotten place from childhood.  We will all smile at the remembrances, the characters in our experiences, and our shared histories.
