There’s that old saying about reading the manual – but you know what – it’s also wonderful to get the advice and tricks of a professional. That’s why we take workshops. One of the participants in our Mobile Photography workshop said, “I just want to learn how to use my iPhone!”
After Joy’s advice, I am happy with where I placed the subject in the frame and was able to focus on the tea cup and not minimize the other items. And then in Snapseed, I tuned it.
It got good play on FB and Instagram.
Mobile Photography with Olivia Joy St. Claire, at 26 Split Rock Cove, was a huge success this month! And because we are in the time we are in, this workshop was the first one to be taught by Zoom. The pros were that we had participants from Texas to New Hampshire to Maine; we had photographers with iPhone 11 Pros, to iPhone 6’s and everything between.
The one thing missing in a virtual space is the human contact, and that’s especially true in learning an art form. We wanted Joy to show us in person how to tilt the camera, and ideas about composing the best picture to share our stories, and to share her love of photography. That said, Joy St. Claire made Zoom a really fun way to learn how to maximize the photographs on our iPhones!!! She made terrific use of the screen share option to show us settings and composition choices through her hand-out. She gave us time to try a few things during class time, and then again outside, during a longer break. We were able to share our ideas, and learned some editing, and then we off on our own to experiment.
Marty Henderson: One of the many helpful things that I learned from the photo class was how to use new apps. This photo was created from Lens Blur on the Snapseed
I’d like to share some of the results of that day, and let you know that Joy is repeating this workshop on Saturday, May 23 from 10 – 1:30. I will be there again too – it takes me a while to learn all this, and I am delighted with the results.

I try to look closely at nature at all times, but learning how to capture it uniquely was worth so much to me. Here the force of new ferns pushing up like trees was the whole story. Thank you Joy!
