Day Three was about box making! I remember making a box as fairly complicated. Yes, it does require careful measuring and careful, methodical construction methods, and Joelle Webber made it a pleasure! Each of us had fun and succeeded in making beautiful boxes.
With a thoughtful preparation – pre-cut book board, and packets of fantastic materials also pre-cut glue pots at the ready, and our own paste papers – we all (I made a box, too!) had the opportunity to really think about the importance of the grain of papers and book boards, complementary fabrics and a mixed collection of handmade and commercially made papers, and we were ready to conquer the difficulties of construction without having to worry about some of the other fussier details. Does that make sense?
Joelle had also prepared a terrific hand-out which I, for one, will consult religiously during my next box-making adventure.
By this time during the weekend, the core group had formed friendships and helpful strategies, and the rest of us were part of the great enthusiasm that was nurtured by the work, the instruction, and the products being made.
By the end of the day, each of us had a box to enclose the books made on Day Two, using papers made on Day One. The final products were thrilling. I can’t wait to make another box (maybe I can do it without Joelle this time.) And cannot wait to learn how to do other box structures like a clam-shell box which I have to say I’ve put off until now. I know I can do it!!!
See you all next year ….
