News from 26 Split Rock Cove

Books, books, books. Why do I love making books? I think it might be in my DNA. I have always carried books with me, from the time I lined my bed at naptime to lugging backpacks of books in high school and college, afraid to have forgotten the one I most needed. I read, study, look at books as treasured objects. They are containers of language, images, drawings, lists, ideas, collages, and notes. It seems too good to be true to make them!

This summer’s 3rd Book Arts Intensive at 26 Split Rock Cove was truly wonderful!! From wildly beautiful paste papers to sculptural bindings, box books, and dos-à-dos bindings – the book makers really produced (as seen in the photos above). This year we focused on sculptural forms and ideas, as well as lots of mark making with paint on paper. It made me feel we could do this together for weeks, given the time, space, and a supportive group such as the one here for the weekend. I look forward to next year!! A big shout out to fellow instructors Abbie Read and Cindy McGuirl, and to assistant Paula Blanchard.

The Book Arts Intensives are now sponsored by Midcoast Maine Book Arts. Please join the group’s Facebook page to find out about Midcoast Maine Book Arts and its activities, and discover information about other book arts events and resources. You may also post updates of your own work. Midcoast Maine Book Arts holds Progress Group meetings every other month at the Book Arts Studio at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport. The meetings are open to anyone interested in book arts. Our next meeting will be October 10 at 6:30 pm.

The Fall Workshops at 26 Split Rock Cove, listed below, will bring together journaling enthusiasts, book makers, writers, watercolorists, and mixed media artists. We can do this – a creative life of writing, painting, collage, and book making can be yours this fall!!
