  • The Reviews Are In!

The Bookmaking Skills workshop has just ended. People are excited about their work. Here’s what they had to say:

“Superb! It’s obvious the instructors are professional educators and know the craft and art of making beautiful books. They also shared lots of ‘tips and tricks’ they’ve learned through their own experience … The small participant / student ratio also meant lots of personal attention. Not having to wash my own brushes or having to look for a work station before the glue dried, (I appreciated) having professional quality materials to work with.”

“I’m thrilled with what I learned.”

I most appreciated “spirit, craftsmanship, support, lightheartedness, high quality materials, patience!”

“I loved the sense of unexpectedness that came with layering color for the paste papers, and the fact of hugely increasing cloth options the comes with making your own.”

26 Split Rock Cove is in the middle of a 4 week workshop – Book Making Skills You Want to Know!! So far we’ve covered making our own decorative paste papers and backing fabric for our own book cloth. Paste paper is a open process where participants paint freely, creating patterns and layers of color, each one more interesting than the next. Backing fabric requires some patience and math skills, but we got through it, and everyone was able to complete enough fabric backing for at least two books. Both skills are extremely useful for personalizing the book artist’s work.

Participants include several artists, a writer, an educator, and a quilter. Each will complete one book in the next two weeks, using the ancient method of Coptic binding.

  • Poetry Month at the Rockland Library
Posted on April 6, 2013 by Sandy Weisman
I’m participating in Poetry Month at the Rockland Public Library by exhibiting some of my artist books. Two of my books displayed are collaged images that accompany one of my poems. One of them has been printed in letterpress, which is a wonderful printing process that embosses the book’s paper. The other books are part of my Intertidal Series, a set whose papers have been colored the hues of various creatures or plants in the intertidal zone here in Mussel Ridge Cove. They have been bound in a Japanese stab binding, each binding also referring to the shape of the creature or plant. The books were allowed to be washed in a full tide cycle one summer day in July. They were tied to a solid object at low tide. I kept watch as the tide came up, submerged them, and pushed them back and forth over the 12 hours of the cycle.
