  • Midsummer pleasures

The summer continues with artists and workshops. Rhode Island painter and educator, Kathy Good, spent two very productive weeks at 26 Split Rock Cove towards work for her MFA program. While the ocean called, the wooded areas called louder.

Also, we had a wonderful one-day writing workshop here last Saturday, July 13. Led by Rockport’s, Kathrin Seitz, and titled Writing from Place / Gathering Images, eight participants wrote pieces of memoir, poetry, and essay as they gathered inspiration from the land and ocean here at Mussel Ridge, as well as the gardens on Barbara Reitz’s property. The weather cooperated, the breeze off the ocean was heavenly. Here we are reading our work at the end of the day.

And more to come, as our Encaustic Painting workshop gets underway next week! We are fully enrolled, and the studios are ready for a wonderful 3 days of work! Check back for more pictures and a review of the work.

Be sure to get to Mars Hall Gallery (located between Tenants Harbor and Port Clyde, ME) this Friday from 5 – 8 pm for their first Opening Reception of the season. Artists Diane Green Hebert and Otty Merrill, also studio artists at 26 Split Rock Cove, will be showing recent work.
  • Gel printing day at 26 Split Rock Cove

Here we are – studio artists and invited guest artists – spending several hours in the workshop studio producing gel prints. This fairly quick process using commercial gelatin product as our ‘plates’ and acrylic paints provided results as varied as the artists present. Marnie Stanton led us through the process first and then everyone went crazy.

  • The Reviews Are In!

The Bookmaking Skills workshop has just ended. People are excited about their work. Here’s what they had to say:

“Superb! It’s obvious the instructors are professional educators and know the craft and art of making beautiful books. They also shared lots of ‘tips and tricks’ they’ve learned through their own experience … The small participant / student ratio also meant lots of personal attention. Not having to wash my own brushes or having to look for a work station before the glue dried, (I appreciated) having professional quality materials to work with.”

“I’m thrilled with what I learned.”

I most appreciated “spirit, craftsmanship, support, lightheartedness, high quality materials, patience!”

“I loved the sense of unexpectedness that came with layering color for the paste papers, and the fact of hugely increasing cloth options the comes with making your own.”

  • Our books are finished!

Four weeks of book making and we have completed beautifully designed Coptic-bound books! This is not a binding for the faint of heart, but everyone learned the tricks to this ancient technique. The paste papers and handmade book cloths added personal quality that showed each participant’s unique sense of design and color. 26 Split Rock Cove is looking forward to offering this workshop and many more in the fall.
