Barbara Cone

Teaching Artist, Studio Artist
Barb Cone, a visual artist, independent curator and instructor, divides her time between Cambridge, Mass and Spruce Head, Maine. She has a studio in Somerville, Mass and considers herself fortunate to also be part of the community of artists at Split Rock Cove.

Barb is co-founder of MassWax, a New England-based group for artists working in encaustic, and Lapin Press in Somerville. She exhibits her work nationally and internationally and teaches workshops for artists. She is also very active as an independent curator, curating exhibitions at the Boston Center for the Arts, The New Art Center at Newton (MA), Bowdoin College, the Grossman Gallery at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Historic Highfield in Falmouth, MA.

“Most recently I’ve been interested in the ancient medium of encaustic, a beeswax, resin and pigment formula discovered by the Greeks and endlessly adaptable to contemporary printmaking, sculpture, mixed media and painting. No matter the medium, I’m interested in experimentation, often adapting materials to purposes for which they were not intended. My starting point is often without words and my work tends to be expressive, intuitive and abstract, conveying an emotion, an experience, a remembrance, a sensory impression—any or all of these elements may choose to come together in the finished piece.”
